Sim Greene

I am pleased to share with you, the members of my dear Brotherhood family, the story of the week of the 25th of June.  It was an emotional roller-coaster for some of us as life so surely is. Tuesday saw the fun and hale fellowship of our closing dinner which was followed soon after on the 27th by the passing of David Saltz’s beloved mother, Mia. David, a devoted son, had told me at the dinner that he was worried about his mother.  So the world turns and brings us moments of joy and sorrow, often in quick succession as the world goes about its business.

Guys drifted into the Pickle Barrel on Leslie and shortly after seven, we were ready to go. I needed to make some comments about the year just completed, something which was easier said than done given the noise level in the room as there were two functions there. However, with a few comments, things were brought under control.

A review of the year included:

  • Programming on varied topics: Family financial health, humour, men’s health, sports, Jewishness & baseball
  • Rabbi’s involvement both in attendance at a couple of our events and presenting his enjoyable take on baseball as a Jewish game.
  • A $500.00 donation to Peace of Mind, an organization that brings elite soldiers of the IDF to Canada to help them deal with PTSD.
  • Giving a Camp scholarship to a worthy student
  • Joining with Sisterhood to present a gift to members of the Confirmation class
  • We, after consulting with Rabbi Weiss, selected the  Arthur & Dvora Brown, and Camp George scholarship funds to support.
  • Two BBQ’s with thanks to Paul Stancer, David Saltz, and Alan Coles
  • Happy Birthdays to all of our members were sent out by the reliable Warren Merling and a vote of thanks goes to him!
  • We will try to acknowledge anniversaries in the future.  After all, a family wishes its members Happy Birthday and Happy Anniversary and so should our Brotherhood family.  We’ll try to give you everything but the cake.
  • Acknowledged significant events like illnesses, deaths, births, engagements, weddings.  Just let me know if you have a significant event!!!
  • We want to establish a Chesed Committee and so I am looking for volunteers.  I already have one volunteer raring to go;  more are needed as well as a leader.
  • Stressed Financial literacy for families with our 19th Annual Dessau Tax Clinic and the Steve Borlak Seminar on Estate Planning
  • Reached out to Sisterhood to join us for these programs involving financial literacy.
  • Opened some programs to the Temple & the surrounding community (For a nominal charge)
  • Streaming an event for those forced down south and who were stuck in the warmer climes of Florida which was cancelled by a blizzard, up here; not in Florida!
  • Reaching out to you guys with surveys; we try to be open and democratic, including this event where we asked the guys for feedback.
  • There is work involved running the Brotherhood which included a fair number of executive meetings, one of which will occur this week
  • I extended my personal thanks to the guys who I look to, are my personal gurus, and who have my back:  Cal Avertick, David Nelson. Stephen Isaacs

I then gave out certificates recognizing members of the Brotherhood and others for contributing to our success this year by showing commitment to our programming;

  • Members of the office staff including; Carol Handelman, Jaye Goldberg, Charlotte Cantor and Barbara Barnartt
  • Rabbi Weiss
  • Stephen Isaacs
  • Cal Avertick
  • David Nelson
  • David Saltz
  • Warren Merling
  • Alan Coles
  • Peter Matsdorf
  • Paul Stancer
  • George Volgyesi
  • Ted Berman
  • Stephen Marcus
  • Bernie Keyes
  • Shelly Liebesman
  • Brad Rudin
  • Michael Hutchins

At this point, we were all done talking and the fressing began, served by our overworked server, Miriam.  One of the wonderful aspects of the evening, that was observed by a number of the guys, was the pleasure of seeing the men talking amongst themselves.  It is not something you normally see, so this was great.  I also had some men mention to me that they had met somebody new who seemed to be a really good guy.

Indeed, one of the selling points of belonging to our Brotherhood family is the opportunity to meet new guys and establish friendships that may last a lifetime.  So tell your friends about us… and the price is right.  A couple of coffees a month!  You can’t beat it for value!

When you get a chance, check out the new Brotherhood page on the THZ website.  It has undergone a major overhaul and signifies that we, your Brotherhood are open for business.  We will be updating the page with more info as the time goes by!

Here is an update on the health of Bernie F*****.  As some of you may know, Bernie's health has not been good for two years plus. He is proving himself to be an amazing man!

Bernie is currently in Bridgepoint Hospital and comes home for the weekends. And God willing, may be discharged in August.

I am sure Bernie and Sue would like to hear from you.

And now you know the rest of the story! Stay tuned!

Yours in Brotherhood,

Sim Greene
