Sim Greene

The one thing about time is that it moves along & events unfurl.  So it is with your Brotherhood family, & I want to bring you up to date about them.

First of all comes some great news from the sick bay!  Bernie Fox is planning to go home around Rosh Hashonah.  He has been through the ringer & come out with his spirit intact.  What a man! He has been heroically supported by his wife Susan who deserves much credit for her role in Bernie’s recovery.  I don’t think we can give enough credit to our spouses for their support & help when hard times come around.  David Bergart continues to recover from his stroke at home & is as feisty as ever.  I just want to give a shout out to Brother Ted Berman who is checking in to get some work done.  So Teddy Bear, we’re looking forward to seeing you up & about. I’ll be talking to you!

Dr. Julie McIntyre, our November speaker, tells me “there HAVE been some controlled studies demonstrating the benefits of prayer” on or for those who are prayed for.  So our prayers go out to the three men that their recovery goes well.  As I have said before, if you have a significant event, let me know.  If it is a happy event, we’ll celebrate with you.  If it is not a happy event, let us know about that.  We are here to give you support.  This is why we call ourselves a Brotherhood family.  Families support one another & we aim to do the same here.

We are very blessed to have new members coming into our Brotherhood family.  The welcome mat goes out to Allan Borins who is coming back to us after a time out.  Then there is the newly wed Jason Zimmerman who found a place  to sink his roots as did new dads, Shawn Anker & Christopher King who may be looking for the sleep angel about now!  Zelik Bocknek, an old friend from my high school days, is joining us, which sort of proves that what goes around, comes around. And finally, a huge welcoming hug goes out to Akiva Markus, Andrew Brooke, Jamie Cheslo, Jeffrey Albaum, Mark Shendroff & Steven Klupt.  These eleven new members of our Brotherhood family with their special talents may portend some exciting times for us.  So welcome guys!

Gentlemen, reserve the following dates in your calendars:

Tuesday, October 29 at 7:30: Moshe Schwartz an expert in physical fitness will be here to help us over the hurdles preventing us from becoming more fit!  This event is open to members of our Brotherhood family only & is free.  Light refreshments will be served.  Light refreshments will be served at all of our events this year.  This makes it easier for the marvelous Cal Avertick who may have gotten a little worn down from toting the heavy stuff last year!

Now comes the BIG ANNOUNCEMENT! All future Brotherhood programs mentioned in this message to the Brotherhood are open to everyone & his or her mother, brother, father, sister and… well you get it!  We are the welcoming Brotherhood this year!  BUT there is a cost:  Members of our Brotherhood family are free!  Temple members will pay $5.00 & Community members will get in for a reasonable $7.00!  WOW!

Thursday, November 21 at 7:00:  the fabulous Dr. Julie McIntyre MD, CCFP, FCFP will be helping us to wrap our brains around Advance Care Planning & End of Life Issues.  When she wound up her immensely successful family practice, Dr. McIntyre, dedication personified, did the unthinkable.  She went back to school & interned at Mount Sinai in the Palliative Care centre.  She is making this presentation to us because she wants to get the word out more quickly than she can on an individual basis!

After a break during which many of us act like Snow Birds & fly the coop to warmer climes & celebrate the New Year,  we will reconvene:

Tuesday, February 11 at 7:30:  Dr. David Saslove, a well known,  long time Temple member & Emergency Room Physician will share with us his view of Emergency Medicine and the impact of Addictions on it.

Tuesday, March 31 at 7:30:  Our own Rabbi Cory Weiss, the accordion playing Rabbi will talk to us about music, Jews in Music, Music in Jews & Jewish influence on pop Music, Broadway & the classics.

Tuesday, May 26 at 7:30:  Sheldon Parker, retired lawyer will speak on Internet Security & Identity Fraud.

We are proud to present these compelling speakers for you.  We, your executive, feel that each topic will be both interesting & informative.  We hope that you will enjoy them!

There is strength in numbers.  Please make sure you check off “Brotherhood”  on your dues form if the fee wasn't already on there.  If you forgot, it is not too late.  Just call the Temple at 905-889-2252.  When the friendly voice of Sarah Greene answers the phone, tell her what you want & she will direct your call!  This is also a great time to recruit a friend or relative to join your Brotherhood family & then, you will have a partner to come to the events with.

The High Holidays are almost upon us.  On behalf of your Brotherhood Executive, I wish you all & your families a wonderful High Holiday period & pray that 5780 brings you all good health, peace & much happiness!

Shana Tova,

Sim Greene
