Project Abraham and the York Region Yazidi Community:  It began on the morning of August 3, 2014. Without warning, ISIS fighters entered the Yazidi city of Sinjar, killing on sight everyone they could find.  Sinjar and most of the surrounding area had been captured, holy shrines were destroyed, and all remaining resistors who would not swear allegiance to ISIS were executed.

Yazidi people, are a monotheistic minority group in Iraq considered infidels by ISIS because they practice their own ancient religion. It is estimated that as many as 5,500 Yazidi men and boys were murdered by ISIS in the August genocide, while thousands of girls and women were taken hostage and subject to sexual torture; many remain captive today.

About 200,000 civilians, Yazidis, and Shiites managed to escape the slaughter.  They ran in the night with only the clothes on their backs. Without food and water, 50,000 Yazidis men, women and children sought refuge on Mt. Sinjar. Thousands of Yazidis fled to Turkey after ISIS overran Sinjar.   Approximately 15,000 Yazidi refugees, mostly women and children, live in UNHCR camps.  In 2015, The Mozuud Freedom Foundation initiated Project Abraham to help bring Yazidis to Canada.
