From representing a chimpanzee to addressing issues of domestic abuse, addiction and murder, Jack Grossman recounts some of the highlights of his career as a lawyer and judge, from the challenges he faced and strategies he employed as a lawyer to the factors he considered while serving as a judge of the Ontario Court of Justice. His characteristic humour and empathy enliven this entertaining and insightful glimpse of the Canadian justice system.

Jack Grossman is a distinguished legal professional and community leader with a lifelong commitment to justice and service. He earned his Bachelor of Arts from the University of Toronto and went on to receive his Bachelor of Laws from Osgoode Hall Law School. After being called to the Bar of Ontario in 1971, he practiced law for nearly three decades, focusing primarily on criminal law.

In 1999, Jack was appointed to the Ontario Court of Justice, where he served with integrity until his retirement in 2019. He is the author of DECISIONS: My Memories as a Lawyer and a Judge, a reflection on his remarkable career in the courtroom.

Jack’s leadership extends well beyond the legal field. He served as President of Beth Tzedec Congregation from 1995 to 1997 and as Vice-President of the Eastern Canadian Region of the United Synagogue of America. He chaired the Advisory Council at Baycrest Centre for Geriatric Care for two years and was deeply involved with the Association of Judges for eight years, where he coordinated conferences and helped lead the Judicial Secretariat. He also co-organized global judicial education programs.
