Out of the Cold Update 20-21

The Har Zion Out of the Cold Program (OOTC) leadership thought that some of you might be wondering about the well-being of our OOTC guests and the operation of our program for this winter.

As you know, in consideration of the pandemic, the Temple remains closed for all programming except for Shabbat services which limit the number of pre-registered attendees. As a result, and like the majority of other faith communities in the Mosaic Interfaith Out of the Cold (MIOTC) program in York Region, we will not be operating our THZ OOTC program this winter.

MIOTC has secured two locations for up to 20 guests to have a safe sleeping location with catered meals for every night of the week until March 31, 2021. Both sites will be run by paid staff and no volunteers will be allowed to work any of the locations. In the meantime, please know that we are forwarding to MOITC some needed supplies that we have in storage to help with the operation of the program this winter.

The program will support guests in finding homes and getting other support services which they desperately need during a pandemic. Each site will have a Case Worker on staff to encourage guests to take advantage of housing arrangements that will be made available.

Some of you have been asking about the donation of used clothing this season. Please note that in compliance with current Public Health Directives, the program will not be accepting any used clothing this season. If you have any questions, please contact Rickie Glickman.

We hope that we will be able to resume operating our program at Temple next season (2021/2022).

Please know that we are both proud of and grateful for the continued support we receive for the OOTC Program from the Temple Har Zion community and its leadership.

Stay safe and stay well. Find joy in small things and be kind to one another.

Sid Finkelstein, Rickie Glickman, and Steve Borlak
