Brotherhood Reports

I hope you all have been enjoying this pleasant summer weather: things have been happening here in the ol’ Hood.  You may remember that the ever so cool Steve Borlak, our esteemed past-President, gave a seminar on Estate Planning.  Well through the magic of video, that presentation is now online.  To access it, all you need to is click on this URL https://www.harzion.ca/brotherhood  This takes you to the Brotherhood page on the Temple website. 

Once there, you will see “Steve Borlak’s excellent seminar on Estate Planning (click here to view recording)”  Do what it says and, after the disclaimer,  you will be greeted to our own Cal Avertick doing a sublime introduction of Steve.  Then you will have the pleasure of listening to Steve opine on estate planning followed by David Nelson’s sincere thank you to Steve for his efforts.

This did not just happen:  Major kudos and a hearty yasher koach goes to George Volgyesi, for, out of the goodness of his heart, videotaping Steve’s seminar for David Bergart who was in the hospital, could not attend the evening, yet desperately wanted to see Steve’s presentation.  Then we have to thank our world class in-house editor, Stephen Isaacs, for consolidating the video so that it is able to be shown in its entirety.  Finally, a big thank you goes out to Len Bates for actually uploading the program to the internet.  Isn’t it amazing how many people are required to do one little thing.  It gives you a little understanding into how many people it takes to produce a TV show or motion picture!

We are very grateful that David is back home where he belongs and able to watch Steve’s presentation now that it is posted.  Bernie Fox is champing at the bit to get home and will soon be able to do so, once the logistics are worked out.  This will be a wonderful milestone for Bernie as he moves along the road to recovery.  Should I have written “milestone” now that we have gone metric?  Somehow, “kilometre stone” doesn’t ring true does it?  You can email me your opinions at simgreene@rogers.com

Looking ahead, we are very pleased to be kicking off this next year with the brilliant and personable Dr. Julie McIntyre MD, CCFP, FCFP, a retired doctor and noted scientist who will be speaking on an issue that we all need to be informed about: “Advance Care Planning” and “End of Life Issues.”  When she closed her family practice, Dr. McIntyre went back to school and interned to bring herself up to speed on these important and crucial issues.  Reserve the date, September 19 at 7:00.  This event will be open to our entire Temple family.  Light refreshments will be served and there will be no charge. We want everybody to be equipped to deal with these inevitable times when occur and they will! So mark the date on your calendar.

We have booked Rabbi Weiss to speak to your Brotherhood on Tuesday, March 31 at 7:30.  He is mulling over some topics and will get back to me in a week or so about what he has decided on.  You know, if there is something you are keen on having him speak on, let me know.  You can reply to this email or contact me atsimgreene@rogers.com and pass it on to him.

As we move into the new Temple year and fill out our dues forms, don’t forget your Brotherhood family.  We are strong in numbers and the more of us the better.  I know I have made some good friends through the Brotherhood, and at an age where that does not usually happen.  We are here for you to lend our support through good times and other.  The cost is $3.00 a month.  It is bubkes! Probably less than an iced cappuccino at Timmy’s.  So, check off those dues forms.  Join the family!
