Our kickoff event with Moshe Schwartz, last October 29th, was an astounding success!  We had a goodly number of Brothers gather to experience Moshe’s presentation. Which by the way, has been uploaded for you to see!  His topic was “eliminating barriers to exercise”. One example of a barrier would be to begin an exercise or diet program and set a goal that is too difficult to achieve such as losing 25 pounds in one month instead of using a more realistic goal such as losing one pound in one week. He went on to present us with other examples and ideas of how we can set practical and achievable goals for the short term when starting an exercise or diet program. He also talked about various impressive goals which his clients have achieved using this approach.

Another barrier that he shared with us was how a simple modification to an exercise can make all the difference in terms of how it can benefit the body.  A stretching activity such as reaching for the sky can be enhanced to engage the whole body by adding touching your toes. We also learned that going for a brisk walk for fifteen minutes after each meal is much more beneficial than going for one forty-five minute walk and being sedentary for the rest of the day. Moshe went on to demonstrate other exercise activities that can be improved upon to make them more efficient and beneficial.

Cal Avertick, in his eloquent fashion, thanked Moshe for his presentation and announced that the Brotherhood is making a donation in Moshe’s honour to the Canadian Friends of the Israel Guide Dog Centre.  This centre provides seeing eye guide dogs free of charge. Moshe was very pleased with our choice of this charity. He stayed on for quite some time to answer questions and chat. If you would like to inquire about Moshe’s services, you can reach him through info@gentlemotion.ca.  I want to thank David Nelson for introducing Moshe and for this write-up of the evening!

Olivia A. is a child of Har Zion.  She grew up in our Temple Family and I have been proud to call her a friend.  If you attend services, you will have seen her.  She is involved with the Junior Choirs, MHarZY and a gazillion other things.  She now has the opportunity to attend Heller High in Israel for a semester.  This is an expensive matter and she came to our Brotherhood family for help.  Your executive exchanged a series of emails over the matter and we decided to help her.  Accordingly, we gave Olivia a cheque for $500.00 made out to  Union for Reform Judaism with her name and Heller High and its semester (2) written on the memo line.  We pray that her experience exceeds her expectations.  Have a great time, Olivia!

Yesterday, Thursday, at Sunnybrook, while I was having my defibrillator checked, the technician asked me if I wanted it turned off.  I said that would mean that if I had a heart attack, it would not zap me, I would feel no pain and I could die.  She responded “yes!”  I think that she felt that with so many things wrong with me, medically, I might have been looking for a way out of it all.  I told her to leave it alone as I wanted to live because I had things to do and could handle what was wrong.

I also told her that if I was, in fact, dying, then I would enjoy the process as much as I can and be a role model to my children and grandchildren on how to die with aplomb.  It is something that we all will do, and will eventually have to deal with.  I have even written a poem about it which my family and others will eventually read!  How is this for an intro to our next event!

https://files.constantcontact.com/45ec339a001/d590c6ad-f69d-4ad8-9e10-667275aaddf0.pngDr. Julia McIntyre, MD, CCFP, FCFP is a retired doctor who is concerned about how folks deal with matters surrounding death and dying.  She was so concerned that she, in effect and in a sense, went back to school to learn how to help us cope with what we all will eventually face.  Accordingly, she has developed a presentation to help folks open up these necessary discussions.

I remember when my dad was dying, my mother and I were with him.  He told me what he wanted  for his funeral and then I turned to my mother and said now it is time to plan your funeral.  She refused and after urging from my dad and I, she acquiesced and we planned her funeral.  It is not just funerals that need to be discussed, there are financial considerations and the will to be talked about.  Also, where is everything located?  The issues are many, and better to be dealt with sooner, than when it is too late!

Set aside Thursday, November 21 at 7:00 pm to come and hear this wonderful person, Dr. Julia McIntyre MD, CCFP, FCFP share with us her observations and expertise about Advance care Planning and End of Life Issues, Your life, Your Wishes.  You will not be sorry.  I have described her as a wonderful person.  That is not just B.S.  I first learned of Dr. McIntyre from Sid Finkelstein, thank you Sid!  I called her up and we talked for over an hour.  She agreed to come and talk to us.  Long story short, we had arranged to go for coffee, so, we could actually meet before the event.  Unfortunately, I wound up in the hospital and she came to meet me there with an orchid as a present!  I mean who does that for a stranger?  Only a wonderful person like Julia would!

So, come on Thursday, November 21 at 7:00 pm to hear this wonderful person, Dr. Julia McIntyre MD, CCFP, FCFP share with us her observations and expertise about Advance care Planning and End of Life Issues, Your life, Your Wishes.  All you have to do is reply to this email to let me know that you are coming.  It is free for you and your wife.

Remember, our resident Chow Hound, the sublime Cal Avertick needs to know how many to provide for.  So you have to let me know if you are coming and bringing your lovely bride (wife) with you.  So just reply to this email and we’re in business!

I’ll see you then.  If I haven’t met you, come over and let me shake your hand!  Actually, even if I have met you, come on over!

Yours in Brotherhood
