Rabbi Michael and Celia Stroh Annual Lecture | Community, Betrayal and Autonomy: Prof. Sol Goldberg
Tuesday, November 12, 2019 • 14 Cheshvan 5780
8:00 PM - 9:30 PMHalberstadt Social HallIn the Tanach (Bible), the Hebrew word ‘chesed’ is translated as ‘loyalty’ or ‘faithfulness’, and is loyalty to the Covenant. Bible scholar, Norman Snaith calls chesed the glue that holds the Covenant together. Does the Jewish Community have a rightful claim to the loyalty of its members? Communities and identity groups have a natural interest in their continued existence, and religious communities place a premium on the virtue of loyalty. At the same time betrayal and non-conformity are inevitable. We will consider loyalty, betrayal and individual autonomy from the perspective of the Jewish Community and those, who in its eyes betray it.
