7:30 PM - 9:00 PM"Kantika" in Ladino means " Little Song". A dazzling Sephardic multigenerational saga that moves from Istanbul to Barcelona, Havana, and New York, exploring displacement, endurance, and family as home. This multigenerational saga is based on the writer's own family history. She weaves together a timeline from Ottoman Turkey to Spain and NYC, focusing on the life of her grandmother Rebecca. In spite of tragic circumstances, Rebecca remains a strong woman, family and tradition centered, grounded by the music of her past. She works as a seamstress, a coach for her stepdaughter Luna to surmount her physical handicaps, raises her children, and loves her "American" husband. Very well researched, this mesmerizing novel captures the feeling of displacement of immigrants in all countries.
